Richardson extrapolation
Builds on Big O notationDerivative
Definition
Let be a number and let be approximations of , defined for small . Assume that there are a constant and exponents such that in big O notation. For a fixed ratio , the Richardson extrapolation of is Then .
Remarks
The last claim is a direct computation: in the terms and cancel, and . Example: for a function with five continuous derivatives, the central difference satisfies . With and , the extrapolation approximates the derivative with error . Non-example: if the true error is but one uses , then , which is still of first order; the exponent must be the true leading exponent. The procedure can be repeated with the next exponent of the error expansion, which gives a triangular table of extrapolated values.
