Definition

Let MM be a smooth manifold with an affine connection βˆ‡\nabla, and let 𝔛(M)\mathfrak{X}(M) be the space of smooth vector fields on MM. The curvature tensor of βˆ‡\nabla is the map R:𝔛(M)3→𝔛(M)R : \mathfrak{X}(M)^3 \to \mathfrak{X}(M) given by R(X,Y)Z=βˆ‡Xβˆ‡YZβˆ’βˆ‡Yβˆ‡XZβˆ’βˆ‡[X,Y]Z,R(X, Y) Z = \nabla_X \nabla_Y Z - \nabla_Y \nabla_X Z - \nabla_{[X, Y]} Z, where [X,Y][X, Y] is the Lie bracket. When (M,g)(M, g) is a Riemannian manifold and βˆ‡\nabla is its Levi-Civita connection, RR is the Riemann curvature tensor of (M,g)(M, g).

Remarks

RR is C∞(M)C^\infty(M)-linear in XX, YY and ZZ, so it is a tensor field of type (1,3)(1, 3), and R(Y,X)=βˆ’R(X,Y)R(Y, X) = -R(X, Y). Some books use the opposite sign; the convention here gives positive sectional curvature g(R(X,Y)Y,X)>0g(R(X, Y) Y, X) > 0 on the sphere. Example: for the flat connection of ℝn\R^n, βˆ‡Xβˆ‡YZβˆ’βˆ‡Yβˆ‡XZ=βˆ‡[X,Y]Z\nabla_X \nabla_Y Z - \nabla_Y \nabla_X Z = \nabla_{[X, Y]} Z by symmetry of second derivatives, so R=0R = 0. For the round sphere of radius rr, R(X,Y)Z=rβˆ’2(g(Y,Z)Xβˆ’g(X,Z)Y)R(X, Y) Z = r^{-2} \big( g(Y, Z) X - g(X, Z) Y \big). Non-example of a tensor: the expression βˆ‡Xβˆ‡YZβˆ’βˆ‡Yβˆ‡XZ\nabla_X \nabla_Y Z - \nabla_Y \nabla_X Z alone is not C∞(M)C^\infty(M)-linear in XX, as replacing XX by fXfX adds βˆ’(Yf)βˆ‡XZ-(Yf) \nabla_X Z; the term βˆ‡[X,Y]Z\nabla_{[X, Y]} Z removes this. In a chart, R(βˆ‚i,βˆ‚j)βˆ‚k=βˆ‘lRlkijβˆ‚lR(\partial_i, \partial_j) \partial_k = \sum_l R^l{}_{kij} \partial_l with Rlkij=βˆ‚iΞ“jklβˆ’βˆ‚jΞ“ikl+βˆ‘m(Ξ“imlΞ“jkmβˆ’Ξ“jmlΞ“ikm)R^l{}_{kij} = \partial_i \Gamma^l_{jk} - \partial_j \Gamma^l_{ik} + \sum_m (\Gamma^l_{im} \Gamma^m_{jk} - \Gamma^l_{jm} \Gamma^m_{ik}). For the Levi-Civita connection, Rabcd=g(R(Xc,Xd)Xb,Xa)R_{abcd} = g(R(X_c, X_d) X_b, X_a) is antisymmetric in (a,b)(a, b) and in (c,d)(c, d) and symmetric under (a,b)↔(c,d)(a, b) \leftrightarrow (c, d).
