Riemann ellipsoid

Example

Take a homogeneous, incompressible, self-gravitating fluid of constant density ρ\rho that fills the ellipsoid x12/a12+x22/a22+x32/a32≤1x_1^2/a_1^2 + x_2^2/a_2^2 + x_3^2/a_3^2 \le 1 with semi-axes a1,a2,a3>0a_1, a_2, a_3 > 0. Let the ellipsoid rotate rigidly with angular velocity Ω\Omega about the x3x_3-axis. In the rotating frame, let the fluid move with the velocity field u=λ(a1a2x2,  −a2a1x1,  0),u = \lambda \left( \frac{a_1}{a_2} x_2, \; -\frac{a_2}{a_1} x_1, \; 0 \right), where λ\lambda is a real constant. This flow is tangent to the ellipses x12/a12+x22/a22=constx_1^2/a_1^2 + x_2^2/a_2^2 = \text{const}, since ddt(x12/a12+x22/a22)=2λ(x1x2/(a1a2)−x1x2/(a1a2))=0\frac{d}{dt}\big(x_1^2/a_1^2 + x_2^2/a_2^2\big) = 2\lambda\big(x_1 x_2/(a_1 a_2) - x_1 x_2/(a_1 a_2)\big) = 0, so the surface keeps its shape. It has divergence zero and uniform vorticity ζ=−λ(a12+a22)/(a1a2)\zeta = -\lambda (a_1^2 + a_2^2)/(a_1 a_2) along the x3x_3-axis. A Riemann ellipsoid of type S is such a configuration with suitable a1,a2,a3a_1, a_2, a_3, Ω\Omega and ζ\zeta, chosen as follows. The pressure given by the Euler equations with the gravity of the ellipsoid vanishes on the boundary. Then the figure is a steady equilibrium.

Remarks

The family contains the classical figures as special cases. With ζ=0\zeta = 0 it gives the Jacobi ellipsoids, which rotate rigidly. With Ω=0\Omega = 0 it gives the Dedekind ellipsoids, which are at rest in space but carry internal flow. With a1=a2a_1 = a_2 and no internal flow it gives the Maclaurin spheroids. Riemann also found equilibria in which the rotation and the vorticity are not parallel but lie in a principal plane of the ellipsoid.
