Riemann zeta function

Definition
For a complex number and an integer , let . For , the Dirichlet series converges absolutely, and it defines a holomorphic function on the half-plane . This function has a unique analytic continuation to a meromorphic function on . The Riemann zeta function is this meromorphic function . Its only pole is a simple pole at , with residue .
Remarks
Example: , the value of the series in the Basel problem. Non-example of the series form: at the series is the harmonic series, which diverges, and has its pole there. At or the series diverges too, but is defined there by continuation: and . For the continuation is given by since the integral converges there. The functional equation gives the continuation to all of . The uniqueness of the continuation follows from the identity theorem.
