Definition
Let be a smooth manifold with tangent bundle . A Riemannian metric on is a family such that:
- for each , is an inner product on , that is, a symmetric positive definite bilinear form;
- for all smooth vector fields on , the function is smooth.
Remarks
Equivalently, is a smooth symmetric tensor field of type that is positive definite at every point. In a chart, where is a symmetric positive definite matrix depending smoothly on ; one often writes . Example: on the upper half-plane , is a Riemannian metric; its matrix is symmetric and positive definite because , and its entries are smooth. Non-example: on , fails clause 1 on the line , where is not positive definite. The length of a piecewise smooth curve is . Every smooth manifold (Hausdorff and second countable) has a Riemannian metric: glue Euclidean metrics of charts with a partition of unity; positive definiteness survives convex combinations.
