Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring, and let MM and NN be modules over RR. Let ⟨⋅,⋅⟩ ⁣:M×N→R\langle \cdot, \cdot \rangle \colon M \times N \to R be a perfect pairing, that is, an RR-bilinear map with two properties. The map x↦⟨x,⋅⟩x \mapsto \langle x, \cdot \rangle is an isomorphism from MM onto Hom⁡R(N,R)\Hom_R(N, R), and y↦⟨⋅,y⟩y \mapsto \langle \cdot, y \rangle is an isomorphism from NN onto Hom⁡R(M,R)\Hom_R(M, R). Let II be a set. A root pairing indexed by II is a pair of injective maps i↦αii \mapsto \alpha_i from II to MM and i↦αi∨i \mapsto \alpha_i^\vee from II to NN such that:

  1. ⟨αi,αi∨⟩=2\langle \alpha_i, \alpha_i^\vee \rangle = 2 for each i∈Ii \in I;
  2. for all i,j∈Ii, j \in I there is k∈Ik \in I with si(αj)=αks_i(\alpha_j) = \alpha_k and si∨(αj∨)=αk∨s_i^\vee(\alpha_j^\vee) = \alpha_k^\vee.

Here si(x)=x−⟨x,αi∨⟩αis_i(x) = x - \langle x, \alpha_i^\vee \rangle \alpha_i for x∈Mx \in M and si∨(y)=y−⟨αi,y⟩αi∨s_i^\vee(y) = y - \langle \alpha_i, y \rangle \alpha_i^\vee for y∈Ny \in N. The αi\alpha_i are the roots and the αi∨\alpha_i^\vee are the coroots.

Remarks

Example: a root system Φ\Phi in a Euclidean space EE gives a root pairing with R=ℝR = \R, M=EM = E, N=E∗N = E^* and I=ΦI = \Phi. The coroot of α\alpha is the linear form x↦2(x,α)/(α,α)x \mapsto 2(x, \alpha)/(\alpha, \alpha), the coroot of α\alpha seen in the dual space. Clause 1 holds since 2(α,α)/(α,α)=22(\alpha, \alpha)/(\alpha, \alpha) = 2, and clause 2 holds since sαs_\alpha is an isometry that permutes Φ\Phi. Non-example: on M=N=ℤM = N = \Z with ⟨x,y⟩=xy\langle x, y \rangle = xy, the root 11 with coroot 11 fails clause 1, since ⟨1,1⟩=1\langle 1, 1 \rangle = 1. The map sis_i is a reflection: it fixes the kernel of ⟨⋅,αi∨⟩\langle \cdot, \alpha_i^\vee \rangle and sends αi\alpha_i to −αi-\alpha_i. When R=ℤR = \Z, the modules MM and NN are free of finite rank and II is finite, a root pairing is the same as a root datum (M,Φ,N,Φ∨)(M, \Phi, N, \Phi^\vee).
