Rossby number

Builds on Dimensionless numbers in fluid mechanics

Definition

Consider a flow in a frame that rotates with angular speed Ω\Omega, and let ff be the Coriolis parameter. On a planet at latitude φ\varphi, f=2Ωsin⁡φf = 2 \Omega \sin \varphi. Let UU be a characteristic speed and LL a characteristic horizontal length of the flow. The Rossby number is Ro=UfL.\mathrm{Ro} = \frac{U}{f L}.

Remarks

It is a dimensionless number: [fL]=𝖳−1𝖫=[U][f L] = \mathsf{T}^{-1} \mathsf{L} = [U]. Example: a mid-latitude weather system with U=10 m/sU = 10\ \mathrm{m/s}, L=106 mL = 10^6\ \mathrm{m} and f=10−4 s−1f = 10^{-4}\ \mathrm{s}^{-1} has Ro=0.1\mathrm{Ro} = 0.1, so rotation dominates. Non-example: U/fU / f alone is not a Rossby number; it has dimension 𝖫\mathsf{L}. The Rossby number is the ratio of the advective acceleration U2/LU^2 / L to the Coriolis acceleration fUf U.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
