Rossby wave
Definition
Consider a two-dimensional incompressible flow on a -plane, where the Coriolis parameter is with constants and . Let be its stream function, so that the velocity is and the relative vorticity is . The linearised barotropic vorticity equation about a state of rest is A Rossby wave is a plane-wave solution of this equation with and . Such a function is a solution exactly when
Remarks
Indeed , so the equation becomes . The zonal phase speed is negative, so the crests move westward. On a sphere of radius at latitude , . In a uniform eastward flow the relation becomes , and the waves are stationary when .
Example: with ms and a wavelength of km in with , m, and the phase speed is about m/s.
Non-example: on an -plane, where , the relation gives ; there is no propagating Rossby wave.
