Row echelon form

Definition

Let FF be a field and let AA be an m×nm \times n matrix over FF. The leading entry of a nonzero row of AA is its first nonzero entry, from the left. The matrix AA is in row echelon form when these two conditions hold:

  1. Each zero row of AA is below each nonzero row of AA.
  2. For two consecutive nonzero rows, the leading entry of the lower row is strictly to the right of the leading entry of the upper row.

Remarks

The matrix (123004000)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 2 & 3 \\ 0 & 0 & 4 \\ 0 & 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix} is in row echelon form. Some authors also require that each leading entry is 11. In row echelon form, all the entries below a leading entry are zero. Gaussian elimination changes each matrix into a row echelon form by elementary row operations.

Explanations

L1 human

Row echelon form looks like a staircase. Each nonzero row starts further to the right than the row above it, and the zero rows sit at the bottom. A system in this form is easy to solve from the bottom row up.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

  2. Row echelon form definition

What depends on this

2 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
