Saddle-node bifurcation
Builds on Equilibrium pointSmooth function
Definition
Let be smooth, and consider the family of scalar equations with parameter . Write , , for the partial derivatives of . The family has a saddle-node bifurcation at if:
- , so is an equilibrium point for ;
- ;
- ;
- .
Remarks
Under these conditions, the equilibria near form a curve with and . So for on one side of there are two equilibria near , one stable and one unstable, and on the other side there are none.
Example: . Then , vanishes at , and . The equilibria are for , and there are none for .
Non-example: . Here , so clause 4 fails; the two equilibria and exist for all and only cross, which is a transcritical bifurcation.
For a system in , clause 2 is replaced by a condition on the Jacobian matrix at the equilibrium. It must have a simple eigenvalue and no other eigenvalue on the imaginary axis. The conditions 3 and 4 are then imposed on the equation reduced to a centre manifold.
