Definition

Let ๐”ค0\mathfrak{g}_0 be a finite-dimensional real semisimple Lie algebra with a Cartan decomposition ๐”ค0=๐”จโŠ•๐”ญ\mathfrak{g}_0 = \mathfrak{k} \oplus \mathfrak{p}. Let ๐”ž\mathfrak{a} be a maximal abelian subspace of ๐”ญ\mathfrak{p}, and let ๐”ฑ\mathfrak{t} be a maximal abelian subspace of the centralizer of ๐”ž\mathfrak{a} in ๐”จ\mathfrak{k}. Then ๐”ฅ=(๐”ฑโŠ•๐”ž)โŠ—โ„โ„‚\mathfrak{h} = (\mathfrak{t} \oplus \mathfrak{a}) \otimes_\R \C is a Cartan subalgebra of the complexification ๐”ค=๐”ค0โŠ—โ„โ„‚\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{g}_0 \otimes_\R \C, of which ๐”ค0\mathfrak{g}_0 is a real form. Let ฮฆ\Phi be the roots of (๐”ค,๐”ฅ)(\mathfrak{g}, \mathfrak{h}); they are real on i๐”ฑโŠ•๐”ži\mathfrak{t} \oplus \mathfrak{a}. Order the dual of i๐”ฑโŠ•๐”ži\mathfrak{t} \oplus \mathfrak{a} lexicographically with respect to a basis whose first vectors span the dual of ๐”ž\mathfrak{a}. Let ฮ”\Delta be the base of simple roots for the positive roots of this order. The Satake diagram of ๐”ค0\mathfrak{g}_0 is the Dynkin diagram of ฮฆ\Phi with vertex set ฮ”\Delta, decorated as follows:

  1. a vertex ฮฑ\alpha is painted black if ฮฑ\alpha vanishes on ๐”ž\mathfrak{a}, and white otherwise;
  2. two distinct white vertices ฮฑ,ฮฒ\alpha, \beta are joined by a double-headed arrow if ฮฑ\alpha and ฮฒ\beta have the same restriction to ๐”ž\mathfrak{a}.

Remarks

Example: for the compact real form ๐”ฐ๐”ฒ(n)\mathfrak{su}(n) of ๐”ฐ๐”ฉn(โ„‚)\mathfrak{sl}_n(\C), one has ๐”ญ=0\mathfrak{p} = 0, so ๐”ž=0\mathfrak{a} = 0 and every vertex is black. For ๐”ฐ๐”ฉn(โ„)\mathfrak{sl}_n(\R), the space ๐”ž\mathfrak{a} of diagonal matrices of trace 00 is already a Cartan subalgebra. No root vanishes on it, and distinct roots have distinct restrictions, so all vertices are white and there are no arrows. Non-example: the diagram of A1A_1 with one white vertex is not the Satake diagram of ๐”ฐ๐”ฒ(2)\mathfrak{su}(2). For ๐”ฐ๐”ฒ(2)\mathfrak{su}(2) the space ๐”ž\mathfrak{a} is 00, so the vertex must be black; the white vertex belongs to ๐”ฐ๐”ฉ2(โ„)\mathfrak{sl}_2(\R). The Satake diagram does not depend on the choices, up to isomorphism of decorated diagrams. Two real semisimple Lie algebras are isomorphic if and only if their Satake diagrams are isomorphic. The restricted roots of ๐”ค0\mathfrak{g}_0 with respect to ๐”ž\mathfrak{a} are the nonzero restrictions to ๐”ž\mathfrak{a} of the roots in ฮฆ\Phi.
