Statement

Let XX be a finite set with nn elements, let d≥0d \ge 0 be an integer, and let ℱ\mathcal{F} be a family of subsets of XX. Suppose that ℱ\mathcal{F} has VC dimension at most dd, that is, no subset of XX with d+1d + 1 elements is shattered by ℱ\mathcal{F}. Then ∣ℱ∣≤∑i=0d(ni).|\mathcal{F}| \le \sum_{i=0}^{d} \binom{n}{i}.

Remarks

A stronger statement holds: every family ℱ\mathcal{F} shatters at least ∣ℱ∣|\mathcal{F}| subsets of XX, where the empty set counts and is shattered by every nonempty family. It is proved by induction on nn, splitting ℱ\mathcal{F} according to a fixed element xx. If the VC dimension is at most dd, all shattered sets have at most dd elements, which gives the lemma.

The bound is sharp: for d≤nd \le n, the family of all subsets of XX with at most dd elements has VC dimension dd and exactly ∑i≤d(ni)\sum_{i \le d} \binom{n}{i} members. For fixed dd the bound is a polynomial of degree dd in nn, while XX has 2n2^n subsets.

Going deeper

For a student

In learning theory, the lemma bounds the number of ways a class of classifiers with finite VC dimension can label nn points. This polynomial growth is the key step in the proof that such classes are learnable from a number of samples that depends on the dimension. In combinatorial geometry it bounds the complexity of set systems such as half-planes, which leads to the existence of small ε\varepsilon-nets.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
