Definition
Let be a set and let be a family of subsets of . A finite set is shattered by if the set of intersections is the whole power set of . The VC dimension of is the supremum of over all finite sets shattered by . If is nonempty, the empty set is shattered, so the VC dimension is a nonnegative integer or .
Remarks
Example: let and let be the family of closed intervals with . The set is shattered: the intersections , , , come from , , and . No set is shattered, because an interval that contains and contains . So the VC dimension is .
Non-example: for the same family, the set is not shattered, since the pattern fails the condition for every interval .
The family of all subsets of an infinite set has VC dimension . The half-planes in have VC dimension .
