Definition
Let be a pseudo-Riemannian manifold with Ricci curvature . In local coordinates at , let and be the components of and , and let be the inverse matrix of . The scalar curvature of is the function given by the trace of with respect to .
Remarks
The value does not depend on the coordinates; it is the trace of the linear map with . In the Riemannian case, for an orthonormal basis of , .
Example: on the unit sphere , , so .
Non-example: the plain sum , without the factor , depends on the coordinates and is not the scalar curvature. On the sphere of radius in , ; in coordinates at with , one gets for every , while .
For a surface, , where is the Gaussian curvature.
