Statement

Let XX and YY be Banach spaces over ℝ\R or ℂ\C, with continuous duals X′X' and Y′Y'. Let T ⁣:X→YT \colon X \to Y be a bounded linear map, and let T′ ⁣:Y′→X′T' \colon Y' \to X', T′(g)=g∘TT'(g) = g \circ T, be its dual operator. Then TT is a compact operator if and only if T′T' is a compact operator.

Remarks

For the forward direction, let KK be the closure of the image of the unit ball of XX; it is a compact metric space. The functionals in the unit ball of Y′Y', restricted to KK, form a bounded and equicontinuous family of continuous functions on KK. By the Arzelà–Ascoli theorem, every sequence (gn)(g_n) in this ball has a subsequence that converges uniformly on KK, and then (T′gn)(T' g_n) converges in X′X'. For the converse, apply the forward direction to T′T': the bidual T′′T'' is compact, and TT is its restriction to XX under the canonical isometric embeddings X⊆X′′X \subseteq X'' and Y⊆Y′′Y \subseteq Y''. In a Hilbert space HH, the same theorem says that a bounded operator TT is compact if and only if its Hilbert space adjoint T∗T^* is compact.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem lets one move compactness between a space and its dual. It is a key step in the Riesz–Schauder theory of compact operators: it shows that T−λT - \lambda and T′−λT' - \lambda have kernels of the same finite dimension for λ≠0\lambda \ne 0. It also shows that the compact operators on a Hilbert space form a closed ideal stable under the adjoint, which is why the quotient by them is a C*-algebra.
