Definition
Let be the Hamiltonian of a quantum system with Hilbert space , let , and let , a unitary operator for each . In the Schrödinger picture:
- a pure state with vector at time has the vector at time , and a density operator becomes ;
- each observable is a fixed operator, independent of ;
- the expectation value of at time is , or .
Remarks
For , clause 1 gives the solution of the Schrödinger equation with . For a density operator and bounded , it gives the von Neumann equation .
Example: on let with , and . Then , and with , . The spin precesses about the vertical axis.
Non-example: moving both the state by and the observable to is not a valid description. It gives , the expectation value at time instead of .
