Definition

Let FF be a field and let p,q≥1p, q \ge 1. Let MM be a (p+q)×(p+q)(p + q) \times (p + q) block matrix over FF, M=(ABCD),M = \begin{pmatrix} A & B \\ C & D \end{pmatrix}, where AA is p×pp \times p, BB is p×qp \times q, CC is q×pq \times p and DD is q×qq \times q. If AA is invertible, the Schur complement of AA in MM is the q×qq \times q matrix M/A=D−CA−1B.M/A = D - C A^{-1} B. If DD is invertible, the Schur complement of DD in MM is the p×pp \times p matrix M/D=A−BD−1C.M/D = A - B D^{-1} C.

Remarks

Example: let M=(2145)M = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & 1 \\ 4 & 5 \end{pmatrix} with p=q=1p = q = 1 and A=(2)A = (2). Then M/A=5−4⋅12⋅1=3M/A = 5 - 4 \cdot \tfrac{1}{2} \cdot 1 = 3, and indeed det⁡M=10−4=6=2⋅3\det M = 10 - 4 = 6 = 2 \cdot 3. Non-example: for M=(0110)M = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix} and A=(0)A = (0), the block AA is not invertible, so M/AM/A is not defined, although MM itself is invertible. The definition comes from the factorisation M=(Ip0CA−1Iq)(A00M/A)(IpA−1B0Iq),M = \begin{pmatrix} I_p & 0 \\ C A^{-1} & I_q \end{pmatrix} \begin{pmatrix} A & 0 \\ 0 & M/A \end{pmatrix} \begin{pmatrix} I_p & A^{-1} B \\ 0 & I_q \end{pmatrix}, which gives det⁡M=det⁡A⋅det⁡(M/A)\det M = \det A \cdot \det(M/A); see determinant via the Schur complement. In particular, when AA is invertible, MM is invertible if and only if M/AM/A is invertible. The same formulas hold over any commutative ring when AA is invertible.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
