Schur multiplier

Builds on GroupGroup homology

Definition

Let GG be a group. The Schur multiplier of GG is the abelian group M(G)=H2(G,ℤ),M(G) = H_2(G, \Z), the second homology group of GG with coefficients in ℤ\Z with the trivial action.

Remarks

By Hopf's formula, if G≅F/RG \cong F/R with FF a free group and RR a normal subgroup, then M(G)≅(R∩[F,F])/[F,R]M(G) \cong (R \cap [F, F])/[F, R]. For a finite group GG, M(G)M(G) is finite and isomorphic to H2(G,ℂ×)H^2(G, \C^\times), with ℂ×\C^\times under multiplication and the trivial action.

Example: for a cyclic group G=ℤ/mℤG = \Z/m\Z, take F=ℤF = \Z and R=mℤR = m\Z. Then [F,F][F, F] is trivial, so M(ℤ/mℤ)=0M(\Z/m\Z) = 0.

Example: M(ℤ2)≅ℤM(\Z^2) \cong \Z, and for the Klein four-group, M(ℤ/2ℤ×ℤ/2ℤ)≅ℤ/2ℤM(\Z/2\Z \times \Z/2\Z) \cong \Z/2\Z.

Non-example: the first homology group H1(G,ℤ)H_1(G, \Z) is the abelianization G/[G,G]G/[G, G], not the multiplier. For G=ℤ/mℤG = \Z/m\Z with m≥2m \ge 2 it is ℤ/mℤ\Z/m\Z, while M(G)=0M(G) = 0.

If GG is perfect, M(G)M(G) is the kernel of the universal central extension of GG.
