Seismic anisotropy
Builds on Anisotropic elasticityChristoffel equation for anisotropic wavesLinear elasticityLamé parameters
Definition
Let a homogeneous linearly elastic medium have density and stiffness tensor . For a unit vector , let be the eigenvalues of the matrix . By the Christoffel equation, plane waves travelling in the direction have the speeds . The medium shows seismic anisotropy if at least one of these speeds depends on . This is elastic anisotropy as seen by waves.
Remarks
Example: a transversely isotropic medium with vertical symmetry axis has five independent stiffnesses in Voigt notation. Its P-speed is along the axis and across it, so it is anisotropic whenever . Thomsen's parameters , and measure the anisotropy; all vanish for an isotropic medium. Non-example: an isotropic medium has with Lamé parameters . Then , whose eigenvalues , , do not depend on , so it shows no anisotropy. Non-example: speed that changes from place to place, but not with direction, is heterogeneity, not anisotropy.
