Definition

Let KK be an algebraic number field with absolute Galois group GKG_K. Let ϕ ⁣:E→E′\phi \colon E \to E' be an isogeny of elliptic curves over KK. That is, ϕ\phi is a nonconstant morphism over KK that is also a group homomorphism. Let E[ϕ]=ker⁡(ϕ ⁣:E(K‾)→E′(K‾))E[\phi] = \ker(\phi \colon E(\overline{K}) \to E'(\overline{K})), a finite GKG_K-module. For each place vv of KK, let δv ⁣:E′(Kv)→H1(Kv,E[ϕ])\delta_v \colon E'(K_v) \to H^1(K_v, E[\phi]) be the connecting map of the Galois cohomology sequence of 0→E[ϕ]→E→ϕE′→00 \to E[\phi] \to E \xrightarrow{\phi} E' \to 0 over the completion KvK_v. The ϕ\phi-Selmer group of EE over KK is Sel(ϕ)(E/K)={ξ∈H1(K,E[ϕ]):resv(ξ)∈δv(E′(Kv)) for every place v of K},\mathrm{Sel}^{(\phi)}(E/K) = \set{\xi \in H^1(K, E[\phi]) : \mathrm{res}_v(\xi) \in \delta_v(E'(K_v)) \text{ for every place } v \text{ of } K}, where resv ⁣:H1(K,E[ϕ])→H1(Kv,E[ϕ])\mathrm{res}_v \colon H^1(K, E[\phi]) \to H^1(K_v, E[\phi]) is restriction. For an integer n≥2n \ge 2, the nn-Selmer group Sel(n)(E/K)\mathrm{Sel}^{(n)}(E/K) is the case ϕ=[n] ⁣:E→E\phi = [n] \colon E \to E.

Remarks

Equivalently, Sel(ϕ)(E/K)\mathrm{Sel}^{(\phi)}(E/K) is the kernel of H1(K,E[ϕ])→∏vH1(Kv,E)H^1(K, E[\phi]) \to \prod_v H^1(K_v, E). There is an exact sequence 0→E′(K)/ϕ(E(K))→Sel(ϕ)(E/K)→Ш(E/K)[ϕ]→0,0 \to E'(K)/\phi(E(K)) \to \mathrm{Sel}^{(\phi)}(E/K) \to \text{Ш}(E/K)[\phi] \to 0, where Ш(E/K)\text{Ш}(E/K) is the Tate–Shafarevich group. The Selmer group is finite and effectively computable, which bounds the rank of E(K)E(K).

Example: for E ⁣:y2=x3−xE \colon y^2 = x^3 - x over ℚ\Q and n=2n = 2, one has E(ℚ)={O,(0,0),(1,0),(−1,0)}E(\Q) = \set{O, (0, 0), (1, 0), (-1, 0)} and 2E(ℚ)={O}2E(\Q) = \set{O}. So E(ℚ)/2E(ℚ)E(\Q)/2E(\Q) has order 44, and by the exact sequence Sel(2)(E/ℚ)\mathrm{Sel}^{(2)}(E/\Q) has order at least 44.

Non-example: a class of H1(ℚ,E[2])H^1(\Q, E[2]) whose restriction to H1(ℝ,E[2])H^1(\R, E[2]) does not come from E(ℝ)E(\R) fails the local condition at the real place, so it is not in Sel(2)(E/ℚ)\mathrm{Sel}^{(2)}(E/\Q).
