Definition

Let XX be a topological space, let f ⁣:X→[−∞,+∞]f \colon X \to [-\infty, +\infty] be a function with values in the extended real line, and let x0∈Xx_0 \in X.

  1. ff is upper semicontinuous at x0x_0 if for every real y>f(x0)y > f(x_0) there is a neighbourhood UU of x0x_0 with f(x)<yf(x) < y for all x∈Ux \in U.
  2. ff is lower semicontinuous at x0x_0 if for every real y<f(x0)y < f(x_0) there is a neighbourhood UU of x0x_0 with f(x)>yf(x) > y for all x∈Ux \in U.

The function ff is upper (lower) semicontinuous if it is upper (lower) semicontinuous at every point of XX.

Remarks

The function ff is upper semicontinuous if and only if {x:f(x)<y}\set{x : f(x) < y} is open for every real yy. It is lower semicontinuous if and only if {x:f(x)>y}\set{x : f(x) > y} is open for every real yy. In terms of limits, ff is upper semicontinuous at x0x_0 if and only if lim sup⁡x→x0f(x)≤f(x0)\limsup_{x \to x_0} f(x) \le f(x_0), and lower semicontinuous at x0x_0 if and only if lim inf⁡x→x0f(x)≥f(x0)\liminf_{x \to x_0} f(x) \ge f(x_0). A real-valued ff is continuous at x0x_0 if and only if it is both upper and lower semicontinuous at x0x_0.

Example: the floor function ⌊⋅⌋ ⁣:ℝ→ℝ\floor{\cdot} \colon \R \to \R is upper semicontinuous. At an integer nn and for y>ny > n, the neighbourhood (n−1,n+1)(n - 1, n + 1) works, since ⌊x⌋≤n<y\floor{x} \le n < y there. At a non-integer, the floor function is locally constant.

Non-example: the indicator function ff of [0,1][0, 1] in ℝ\R is not lower semicontinuous at 00. Here f(0)=1f(0) = 1; for y=1/2y = 1/2, every neighbourhood of 00 contains some x<0x < 0 with f(x)=0<yf(x) = 0 < y.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
