Separable state
Builds on Tensor product of Hilbert spacesDensity matrixConvex hull
Definition
Let and be finite-dimensional complex Hilbert spaces, and let be a density matrix on the tensor product . The state is separable if, for finitely many indices , there are weights with and states , such that Here each is a density matrix on and each is a density matrix on .
Remarks
Example: on , the state is separable. Indeed , with weights . The maximally mixed state is separable with a single term.
Non-example: let . A pure state is an extreme point of the set of states, so in any decomposition as above every term with equals . Then would be a product , which forces to be a product vector, and it is not one.
Equivalently, the separable states form the convex hull of the pure product states . By Carathéodory's theorem, at most terms are needed, where and . In infinite dimension, one takes the closure of this convex hull in the trace norm.
