Sheaf cohomology in topology

Builds on Topological spaceAbelian group

Definition

Let XX be a topological space and let Sh(X)\mathrm{Sh}(X) be the category of sheaves of abelian groups on XX. The global sections functor Γ(X,−) ⁣:Sh(X)→Ab\Gamma(X, -) \colon \mathrm{Sh}(X) \to \mathrm{Ab}, F↦F(X)F \mapsto F(X), is left exact, and Sh(X)\mathrm{Sh}(X) has enough injective objects. For a sheaf FF, choose an injective resolution 0→F→I0→I1→I2→⋯0 \to F \to I^0 \to I^1 \to I^2 \to \cdots in Sh(X)\mathrm{Sh}(X). The qq-th cohomology group of XX with coefficients in FF is Hq(X,F)=Hq(Γ(X,I0)→Γ(X,I1)→Γ(X,I2)→⋯).H^q(X, F) = H^q\big(\Gamma(X, I^0) \to \Gamma(X, I^1) \to \Gamma(X, I^2) \to \cdots\big). So Hq(X,−)H^q(X, -) is the qq-th right derived functor of Γ(X,−)\Gamma(X, -); it does not depend on the choice of resolution up to canonical isomorphism.

Remarks

Always H0(X,F)=F(X)H^0(X, F) = F(X), by left exactness of Γ\Gamma. A short exact sequence of sheaves gives a long exact sequence of cohomology groups.

Example: if XX is a single point, a sheaf is just an abelian group AA, and Γ\Gamma is the identity functor, which is exact. So H0(X,A)=AH^0(X, A) = A and Hq(X,A)=0H^q(X, A) = 0 for q>0q > 0.

Non-example: the rule U↦U \mapsto (constant functions U→ℤU \to \Z) is a presheaf but in general not a sheaf. Two different constants on two disjoint open sets do not glue to a constant function on their union. The definition needs a sheaf, here its sheafification, the sheaf of locally constant functions.

In practice one uses acyclic resolutions instead of injective ones: flasque, soft or fine resolutions compute the same groups. If XX is paracompact, Hausdorff and locally contractible, then Hq(X,A‾)H^q(X, \underline{A}) for the constant sheaf A‾\underline{A} is isomorphic to singular cohomology Hq(X;A)H^q(X; A).

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
