Definition

Let a homogeneous elastic medium with density ρ\rho and stiffness tensor cijklc_{ijkl} show seismic anisotropy. Fix a propagation direction nn and let Γik=cijklnjnl\Gamma_{ik} = c_{ijkl} n_j n_l be the Christoffel matrix, a positive definite symmetric matrix. Suppose two of its eigenvalues belong to quasi-shear waves, with speeds vS1>vS2v_{S1} > v_{S2} and orthonormal eigenvectors e1,e2e_1, e_2, by the Christoffel equation. An incident S-wave travelling along nn with polarization qq in the plane of e1,e2e_1, e_2 is decomposed as q=(q⋅e1)e1+(q⋅e2)e2q = (q \cdot e_1) e_1 + (q \cdot e_2) e_2. After a path of length LL the two parts arrive separated by the delay δt=L(1vS2−1vS1)>0.\delta t = L\Big(\frac{1}{v_{S2}} - \frac{1}{v_{S1}}\Big) > 0. This separation is shear wave splitting; its splitting parameters are the fast polarization direction e1e_1, usually given by an azimuth ϕ\phi, and the delay δt\delta t.

Remarks

Example: over a path of L=200L = 200 km with vS1=4.6v_{S1} = 4.6 km/s and vS2=4.4v_{S2} = 4.4 km/s, the delay is 200(1/4.4−1/4.6)≈2.0200(1/4.4 - 1/4.6) \approx 2.0 s. Non-example: in an isotropic medium vS1=vS2v_{S1} = v_{S2}, so δt=0\delta t = 0 and there is no splitting. Non-example: if the incident polarization qq is parallel to e1e_1 or e2e_2, only one wave is excited. The record then shows no splitting even though the medium is anisotropic; such a record is called a null measurement. The two shear polarizations are orthogonal because Γ\Gamma is symmetric.
