Definition

Let AA be a finite set with at least two elements. An operation ff on AA is a Sheffer function if the set {f}\set{f} is functionally complete. That is, the clone generated by ff contains every finitary operation on AA.

Remarks

Example: NAND, x↑y=¬(x∧y)x \uparrow y = \neg(x \wedge y) on {0,1}\set{0, 1}, is a Sheffer function. Check: ¬x=x↑x\neg x = x \uparrow x and x∧y=¬(x↑y)x \wedge y = \neg(x \uparrow y), and {∧,¬}\set{\wedge, \neg} is functionally complete. Non-example: ∧\wedge on {0,1}\set{0, 1} is not a Sheffer function. Every operation generated by ∧\wedge maps (0,…,0)(0, \dots, 0) to 00, so ¬\neg is not generated. NOR, x↓y=¬(x∨y)x \downarrow y = \neg(x \vee y), is the only other binary Sheffer function on {0,1}\set{0, 1}. A Sheffer function must have arity at least 22, since a unary operation generates only essentially unary operations.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
