Definition

Let ๐’ž\mathcal{C} be a category and let cc be an object of ๐’ž\mathcal{C}. A sieve on cc is a set SS of morphisms with codomain cc with the following property. For every fโ€‰โฃ:dโ†’cf \colon d \to c in SS and every morphism gโ€‰โฃ:eโ†’dg \colon e \to d, the composite fโˆ˜gf \circ g is in SS.

Remarks

Equivalently, a sieve on cc is a subfunctor SโІHomโก๐’ž(โˆ’,c)S \subseteq \Hom_{\mathcal{C}}(-, c) of the representable functor, with S(d)S(d) the set of members of SS with domain dd. The maximal sieve on cc is the set of all morphisms with codomain cc. For a sieve SS on cc and a morphism hโ€‰โฃ:dโ†’ch \colon d \to c, the pullback sieve hโˆ—S={g:hโˆ˜gโˆˆS}h^*S = \set{g : h \circ g \in S} is a sieve on dd. Example: view the poset of open subsets of a space XX as a category, and let {Ui}\set{U_i} be an open cover of UU. The open sets VโІUV \subseteq U that lie in some UiU_i form a sieve on UU, since WโІVโІUiW \subseteq V \subseteq U_i gives WโІUiW \subseteq U_i. Non-example: in the same category, the set {U1}\set{U_1} alone is not a sieve on UU when U1U_1 has a smaller open subset Wโ‰ U1W \ne U_1, since the composite WโІU1โІUW \subseteq U_1 \subseteq U is missing.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
