Simple module

Builds on Module over a ringSubmodule

Definition

Let RR be a ring and let MM be a left RR-module. The module MM is simple if:

  1. M≠0M \ne 0;
  2. the only submodules of MM are 00 and MM.

Remarks

Equivalently, M≠0M \ne 0 and M=RmM = Rm for every nonzero m∈Mm \in M. Example: for a prime pp, the ℤ\Z-module ℤ/pℤ\Z/p\Z is simple. The check: its submodules are subgroups, whose orders divide pp, so they are 00 or ℤ/pℤ\Z/p\Z. Example: for a field KK, the column space KnK^n is a simple Mn(K)M_n(K)-module, since any nonzero vector is sent to any other vector by some matrix. Non-example: the ℤ\Z-module ℤ\Z is not simple, since 2ℤ2\Z is a submodule different from 00 and ℤ\Z; clause 2 fails. The zero module is not simple, by clause 1.
