Definition

Let XX be an algebraic variety over an algebraically closed field kk and let p∈Xp \in X. The point pp is nonsingular (or smooth) if dim⁡kTpX=dim⁡X\dim_k T_p X = \dim X, where TpXT_p X is the Zariski tangent space and dim⁡X\dim X is the dimension of XX. Otherwise dim⁡kTpX>dim⁡X\dim_k T_p X > \dim X, and pp is a singular point of XX. The variety XX is nonsingular if it has no singular point.

Remarks

Jacobian criterion: let X⊆knX \subseteq k^n be an affine variety of dimension dd with I(X)=(f1,…,fr)I(X) = (f_1, \dots, f_r). Then pp is nonsingular if and only if the Jacobian matrix (∂fj∂xi(p))\left(\frac{\partial f_j}{\partial x_i}(p)\right) has rank n−dn - d. Algebraic form: pp is nonsingular if and only if the local ring of XX at pp is a regular local ring. The singular points of XX form a closed subset different from XX.

Example: for X=V(f)⊆k2X = V(f) \subseteq k^2 with f=y2−x2(x+1)f = y^2 - x^2(x + 1), a curve of dimension 11, the partial derivatives are ∂f/∂x=−3x2−2x\partial f / \partial x = -3x^2 - 2x and ∂f/∂y=2y\partial f / \partial y = 2y. Assume char⁡k≠2\operatorname{char} k \ne 2. Both vanish together with ff only at (0,0)(0, 0), so the origin is the only singular point.

Non-example: on the circle V(x2+y2−1)V(x^2 + y^2 - 1) with char⁡k≠2\operatorname{char} k \ne 2, the gradient (2x,2y)(2x, 2y) vanishes only at (0,0)(0, 0), which is not on the circle, so the circle has no singular point.
