Definition

A sketch is a triple ๐’ฎ=(๐’œ,L,C)\mathcal{S} = (\mathcal{A}, L, C) with these parts.

  1. ๐’œ\mathcal{A} is a small category.
  2. LL is a set of cones in ๐’œ\mathcal{A}, each over a small diagram in ๐’œ\mathcal{A}.
  3. CC is a set of cocones in ๐’œ\mathcal{A}, each under a small diagram in ๐’œ\mathcal{A}.

Let ๐’ฆ\mathcal{K} be a category. A model of ๐’ฎ\mathcal{S} in ๐’ฆ\mathcal{K} is a functor Mโ€‰โฃ:๐’œโ†’๐’ฆM \colon \mathcal{A} \to \mathcal{K} with two properties. MM sends each cone in LL to a limit cone. MM sends each cocone in CC to a colimit cocone. A morphism of models is a natural transformation.

Remarks

The sketch is a limit sketch when CC is empty. Some authors use a directed graph with chosen diagrams instead of the category ๐’œ\mathcal{A}; this gives the same models.

Example: let ๐’œ\mathcal{A} be the free category on the graph with two objects X,PX, P and three arrows p1,p2,mโ€‰โฃ:Pโ†’Xp_1, p_2, m \colon P \to X. Let LL contain the single cone (P;p1,p2)(P; p_1, p_2) over the discrete diagram (X,X)(X, X), and let CC be empty. A model in sets is a functor MM with M(P)โ‰…M(X)ร—M(X)M(P) \cong M(X) \times M(X) through M(p1),M(p2)M(p_1), M(p_2). Then M(m)M(m) is a binary operation on M(X)M(X), so models are sets with a binary operation.

Non-example: let M(X)=M(P)={0,1}M(X) = M(P) = \set{0, 1} with M(p1)=M(p2)=M(m)=idโกM(p_1) = M(p_2) = M(m) = \id. This functor is not a model, since {0,1}\set{0, 1} with two identity maps is not a product of {0,1}\set{0, 1} with itself. Indeed, the pair of maps (idโก,constantย 0)(\id, \text{constant } 0) does not factor through it.
