Skew-symmetric matrix

Definition

Let RR be a ring and let A=(aij)A = (a_{ij}) be an n×nn \times n square matrix over RR. The matrix AA is skew-symmetric when AT=−AA^T = -A, where ATA^T is the transpose of AA. Equivalently, aji=−aija_{ji} = -a_{ij} for all ii and jj.

Remarks

If 22 is invertible in RR, for example over R\R, then each diagonal entry of a skew-symmetric matrix is 00. Over a field of characteristic not 22, each square matrix is the sum of a symmetric matrix and a skew-symmetric matrix: A=12(A+AT)+12(A−AT)A = \tfrac12 (A + A^T) + \tfrac12 (A - A^T). A real skew-symmetric matrix of odd order has determinant 00. The matrix (02−20)\begin{pmatrix} 0 & 2 \\ -2 & 0 \end{pmatrix} is skew-symmetric.

Explanations

L1 human

In a skew-symmetric matrix, the entry across the diagonal is the negative of the entry here. Over the real numbers this forces zeros on the diagonal, because only 00 equals its own negative. These matrices describe infinitesimal rotations.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
