Slope field

Definition

Let Ω\Omega be an open subset of R2\mathbb{R}^2 and let f:Ω→Rf : \Omega \to \mathbb{R} be a function. The slope field of the first-order equation y′=f(x,y)y' = f(x, y) is the map that assigns to each point (x,y)∈Ω(x, y) \in \Omega the line through (x,y)(x, y) with slope f(x,y)f(x, y). In a picture, one draws a short segment of this line at each point of a grid in Ω\Omega.

Remarks

Let uu be a differentiable function on an interval. It is a solution of y′=f(x,y)y' = f(x, y) if and only if its graph is tangent to the slope field at each of its points. For y′=yy' = y, the segments are horizontal on the xx-axis and get steeper as ∣y∣|y| grows. For a system x′=F(x)x' = F(x) in the plane, the same picture with arrows is a picture of the vector field FF.

Explanations

L1 human

A slope field shows the direction that a solution must take at each point. You can sketch a solution without a formula: start at a point and follow the small segments. This gives a quick picture of how all the solutions behave.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
