Definition

Let f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y be a morphism of schemes. The morphism ff is smooth if it satisfies the following three conditions.

  1. ff is locally of finite presentation. This means that, for all affine opens Spec⁡B⊆X\operatorname{Spec} B \subseteq X and Spec⁡A⊆Y\operatorname{Spec} A \subseteq Y with f(Spec⁡B)⊆Spec⁡Af(\operatorname{Spec} B) \subseteq \operatorname{Spec} A, the AA-algebra BB is finitely presented.
  2. ff is flat.
  3. For every y∈Yy \in Y with residue field κ(y)\kappa(y), the fiber XyX_y is geometrically regular over κ(y)\kappa(y). This means that Xy×κ(y)Spec⁡κ(y)‾X_y \times_{\kappa(y)} \operatorname{Spec} \overline{\kappa(y)} is a regular scheme, where κ(y)‾\overline{\kappa(y)} is an algebraic closure of κ(y)\kappa(y).

Remarks

For a ring AA, the projection 𝔸An→Spec⁡A\mathbb{A}^n_A \to \operatorname{Spec} A is smooth. It is of finite presentation and flat, and each fibre is affine space over a field, which stays regular over the algebraic closure. For a field kk, the morphism X=Spec⁡k[x,y]/(y2−x3)→Spec⁡kX = \operatorname{Spec} k[x, y]/(y^2 - x^3) \to \operatorname{Spec} k is not smooth. Clause 3 fails, since the local ring at the origin has maximal ideal (x,y)(x, y), which needs two generators while the curve has dimension one. Equivalently, ff is smooth of relative dimension nn if and only if three conditions hold. It is flat and locally of finite presentation, its nonempty fibres have pure dimension nn, and ΩX/Y\Omega_{X/Y} is locally free of rank nn. The ring version of this notion is a smooth morphism of rings.
