Definition
Let be a locally compact Hausdorff space and let be or . A continuous function vanishes at infinity if, for every , the set is compact. The space of functions vanishing at infinity is the set of these functions, with pointwise operations and the norm .
Remarks
Example: on . For , the set is the closed bounded interval , which is compact. For it is empty.
Non-example: the constant function on . For , the set is all of , which is not compact.
Each is bounded: off the compact set , and attains a maximum on that set if it is nonempty. So is a subspace of the space of bounded continuous functions, and it is closed there, so it is a Banach space. If is compact, then . For with the discrete topology, is the sequence space . The compactly supported continuous functions are dense in .
