Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1, let FF be a field, and let λ\lambda be a partition of nn with Young diagram DλD_\lambda. A Young tableau tt of shape λ\lambda is a bijective filling of the boxes of DλD_\lambda with 1,…,n1, \ldots, n. The symmetric group SnS_n acts on tableaux by acting on the entries. Two tableaux are row-equivalent if corresponding rows have the same sets of entries. The class {t}\set{t} of tt under this relation is a tabloid. Let MλM^\lambda be the vector space over FF with basis the tabloids of shape λ\lambda, with the induced action of SnS_n. Let Ct≤SnC_t \le S_n be the column subgroup of tt, the permutations that keep each column of tt as a set. The polytabloid of tt is et=∑σ∈Ctsgn⁡(σ) σ{t}∈Mλ,e_t = \sum_{\sigma \in C_t} \sgn(\sigma) \, \sigma \set{t} \in M^\lambda, where sgn⁡\sgn is the sign. The Specht module SλS^\lambda is the subspace of MλM^\lambda spanned by the ete_t for all tableaux tt of shape λ\lambda.

Remarks

Since πet=eπt\pi e_t = e_{\pi t} for π∈Sn\pi \in S_n, the space SλS^\lambda is a representation of SnS_n, that is, an F[Sn]F[S_n]-module. Example: for λ=(n)\lambda = (n), one row, there is only one tabloid and CtC_t is trivial, so S(n)S^{(n)} is the trivial representation of degree 11. For λ=(1n)\lambda = (1^n), one column, each row has a single box, so there are n!n! tabloids, Ct=SnC_t = S_n and πet=sgn⁡(π)et\pi e_t = \sgn(\pi) e_t, so S(1n)S^{(1^n)} is the sign representation. Non-example: the space MλM^\lambda itself is not in general a Specht module; for λ=(n−1,1)\lambda = (n-1, 1) it is the permutation representation on nn points, of dimension nn, while S(n−1,1)S^{(n-1,1)} has dimension n−1n - 1. The polytabloids ete_t for standard tableaux tt, increasing along rows and down columns, form a basis of SλS^\lambda. If FF has characteristic 00, the modules SλS^\lambda are irreducible, pairwise non-isomorphic, and every irreducible representation of SnS_n over FF is isomorphic to one of them.
