Definition
Let be an abelian category and let be an integer. A cohomological spectral sequence in starting at page consists of:
- for every and all integers , an object of ;
- for every and all , a morphism such that ;
- for every and all , an isomorphism of with the homology .
The family is the -th page.
Remarks
A spectral sequence is first quadrant if unless and . Then for fixed the differentials into and out of vanish for large, so is eventually constant; its value is . The sequence converges to objects , written , if each has a finite filtration with . Example: if for , then every with starts or ends at a zero object, because it changes by ; so and . Non-example: let , all other , let be the identity of , and put . Clause 3 fails, since the homology of is zero at and at , while . Homological spectral sequences are defined in the same way with .
