Definition

Let GG be a locally compact abelian group with Pontryagin dual G^\widehat{G}, and let L1(G)L^1(G) be its group algebra. For f∈L1(G)f \in L^1(G) let f^\widehat{f} be its Fourier transform.

  1. The hull of a closed ideal II of L1(G)L^1(G) is Z(I)={χ∈G^:f^(χ)=0 for all f∈I}Z(I) = \set{\chi \in \widehat{G} : \widehat{f}(\chi) = 0 \text{ for all } f \in I}.
  2. For a closed set E⊆G^E \subseteq \widehat{G}, let I(E)={f∈L1(G):f^(χ)=0 for all χ∈E}I(E) = \set{f \in L^1(G) : \widehat{f}(\chi) = 0 \text{ for all } \chi \in E}, a closed ideal with hull EE.
  3. A closed set E⊆G^E \subseteq \widehat{G} is a set of spectral synthesis if I(E)I(E) is the only closed ideal of L1(G)L^1(G) whose hull is EE.

Spectral synthesis holds for GG if every closed subset of G^\widehat{G} is a set of spectral synthesis.

Remarks

Every closed ideal II with hull EE satisfies I⊆I(E)I \subseteq I(E), so EE is a set of synthesis exactly when I(E)I(E) is the smallest closed ideal with hull EE. The hull of I(E)I(E) is EE because L1(G)L^1(G) is a regular algebra: for χ∉E\chi \notin E there is ff whose transform vanishes on EE but not at χ\chi.

Example: E=∅E = \emptyset is a set of synthesis. Here I(∅)=L1(G)I(\emptyset) = L^1(G), and Wiener's Tauberian theorem says that a closed ideal whose transforms have no common zero is all of L1(G)L^1(G).

Example: if GG is compact, then G^\widehat{G} is discrete and spectral synthesis holds for GG.

Non-example: for G=ℝ3G = \R^3, the unit sphere in ℝ3^≅ℝ3\widehat{\R^3} \cong \R^3 is not a set of spectral synthesis, by a result of Laurent Schwartz.

Other names are a set of synthesis and a set that admits spectral synthesis.
