Definition

Let HH be a complex Hilbert space and let B(H)B(H) be the algebra of bounded operators on HH. Let AA be a unital ∗*-subalgebra of B(H)B(H). Let DD be a densely defined unbounded self-adjoint operator on HH with domain dom⁡D\operatorname{dom} D. The triple (A,H,D)(A, H, D) is a spectral triple if:

  1. for every a∈Aa \in A, the operator aa maps dom⁡D\operatorname{dom} D into itself, and the commutator [D,a]=Da−aD[D, a] = Da - aD on dom⁡D\operatorname{dom} D extends to a bounded operator on HH;
  2. the resolvent (D−λI)−1(D - \lambda I)^{-1} is a compact operator for one, and then for every, λ∈ℂ∖ℝ\lambda \in \C \setminus \R.

Remarks

Example: let A=C∞(S1)A = C^\infty(S^1) act on H=L2(S1)H = L^2(S^1) by multiplication and let D=−i d/dθD = -i \, d/d\theta on the Sobolev space of functions with square-integrable derivative. The functions en(θ)=einθe_n(\theta) = e^{in\theta}, n∈ℤn \in \Z, form an orthonormal basis of eigenvectors with Den=nenD e_n = n e_n, so (D−i)−1(D - i)^{-1} has eigenvalues 1/(n−i)→01/(n - i) \to 0 and is compact. For f∈Af \in A the product rule gives [D,f]=−if′[D, f] = -i f', which is multiplication by a bounded function. More generally, smooth functions on a compact Riemannian spin manifold, acting on square-integrable spinors, with the Dirac operator, form a spectral triple.

Non-example: if HH is infinite-dimensional and D=0D = 0, every commutator is 00, so clause 1 holds. But (D−iI)−1=iI(D - i I)^{-1} = i I is not compact, so clause 2 fails.

Often AA is a dense ∗*-subalgebra of a C*-algebra, and AA acts on HH through a faithful ∗*-representation. A spectral triple is called even if there is a self-adjoint unitary γ\gamma on HH that commutes with AA and anticommutes with DD. For two states φ\varphi and ψ\psi of the norm closure of AA, Connes' distance formula is d(φ,ψ)=sup⁡{∣φ(a)−ψ(a)∣:a∈A, ∥[D,a]∥≤1}.d(\varphi, \psi) = \sup \set{ \abs{\varphi(a) - \psi(a)} : a \in A, \ \|[D, a]\| \le 1 }. It recovers the geodesic distance when φ\varphi and ψ\psi are evaluations at two points of a manifold.
