Spectrum of a matrix

Definition

Let FF be a field and let AA be an n×nn \times n matrix over FF. The spectrum of AA is the set σ(A)={λ∈F:A−λIn is not invertible}.\sigma(A) = \{\lambda \in F : A - \lambda I_n \text{ is not invertible}\}. It is the set of eigenvalues of AA.

Remarks

The spectrum has at most nn elements, because each eigenvalue is a root of the characteristic polynomial of degree nn. Over C\C, the spectrum of each square matrix is nonempty. The spectrum depends on the field: the real matrix (0−110)\begin{pmatrix} 0 & -1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix} has empty spectrum over R\R and spectrum {i,−i}\{i, -i\} over C\C. Some authors count the eigenvalues with their multiplicities and call this list the spectrum.

Explanations

L1 human

The spectrum is the list of all eigenvalues of a matrix. It tells us the scaling factors that the matrix shows in special directions. For a diagonal matrix, it is the set of diagonal entries.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
