Spontaneous magnetization
Definition
Let , and consider the ferromagnetic Ising model on with nearest-neighbour coupling , inverse temperature and field . For a finite box , let be the Gibbs expectation with free boundary condition. Let be the magnetization in the thermodynamic limit. The spontaneous magnetization is
Remarks
The limit over boxes exists, and is nondecreasing, so the limit as exists. The value equals , the magnetization of the infinite-volume state with plus boundary condition. It is the order parameter of the transition: for there is a critical with for and for .
Example: on , Yang proved in 1952 that for , and otherwise. Near this gives , so the critical exponent is .
Non-example: the magnetization at a fixed is positive at every temperature. It is a response to the field, not spontaneous, because the limit has not been taken. In dimension , for every , so there is no spontaneous magnetization at any positive temperature.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
