Definition
Let be a real random variable that is not almost surely constant. Let be independent random variables with the same law as . The law of is stable if for all there are and such that has the same law as . It is strictly stable if moreover can be chosen for all .
Remarks
For a stable law there is a unique , the index, such that always. The characteristic function of a stable law has the form , with for and for , where , and . Example: let be normal with mean and variance . Then is normal with mean and variance . So it has the law of with , and the index is . Example: for the standard Cauchy law, , so has characteristic function , the law of ; this is index . Non-example: let be Poisson with mean . Then is Poisson with mean , and takes all values in . If it had the law of , comparing the two smallest values of the supports would force and , but has mean . For , if and only if ; so the variance is infinite, and the mean is finite only for . Some authors also call the point masses stable.
