Definition

Let (M,g)(M, g) be a spacetime with signature (−,+,+,+)(-, +, +, +), in units where c=1c = 1, and let ∇\nabla be its Levi-Civita connection. A stress–energy tensor of a matter distribution on MM is a symmetric (0,2)(0, 2)-tensor field TT with the following meaning. Let uu be the four-velocity of an observer at a point, with g(u,u)=−1g(u, u) = -1, and let ee, e′e' be unit vectors orthogonal to uu.

  1. T(u,u)T(u, u) is the energy density measured by the observer.
  2. −T(u,e)-T(u, e) is the density of momentum in the direction ee, which equals the flux of energy in the direction ee.
  3. T(e,e′)T(e, e') is the flux in the direction e′e' of the momentum in the direction ee, that is, the stress.

For an isolated system the tensor satisfies the local conservation law ∇μTμν=0\nabla^\mu T_{\mu\nu} = 0.

Remarks

Example: dust of energy density ρ≥0\rho \ge 0 moving with four-velocity UU has T=ρ U♭⊗U♭T = \rho \, U^\flat \otimes U^\flat, where U♭=g(U,⋅)U^\flat = g(U, \cdot). For the observer u=Uu = U, T(u,u)=ρ g(U,U)2=ρT(u, u) = \rho \, g(U, U)^2 = \rho, and T(u,e)=0T(u, e) = 0 and T(e,e′)=0T(e, e') = 0, since g(U,e)=0g(U, e) = 0: no momentum flow and no stress in the rest frame. A perfect fluid with pressure pp has T=(ρ+p)U♭⊗U♭+p gT = (\rho + p) U^\flat \otimes U^\flat + p \, g. Non-example: an antisymmetric tensor such as the electromagnetic tensor FF is not a stress–energy tensor, since a stress–energy tensor must be symmetric. The electromagnetic field has the stress–energy tensor FμαFνα−14gμνFαβFαβF_{\mu\alpha}F_\nu{}^\alpha - \frac14 g_{\mu\nu} F_{\alpha\beta}F^{\alpha\beta}, up to a constant factor. In an inertial frame of special relativity, the components T00T^{00}, T0iT^{0i} and TijT^{ij} are the energy density, the energy flux and the stress tensor.
