Definition
Let be a local ring with residue field , and let be a separable closure of . A local ring is strictly Henselian if it is a Henselian local ring and its residue field is separably closed. A strict Henselization of is a local ring with a local homomorphism . The residue field of is identified with , and the following hold:
- is strictly Henselian.
- The map of residue fields induced by is the inclusion .
- Let be a strictly Henselian local ring with residue field , let be a local homomorphism, and let be a -embedding. Then there is exactly one local homomorphism with that induces on residue fields.
Remarks
A strict Henselization exists and is unique up to a unique isomorphism once is fixed. It is a direct limit of localizations of Γ©tale -algebras, and the map is faithfully flat. The map factors through the Henselization of .
Example: for a field , the field with the inclusion is a strict Henselization. A field is a Henselian local ring with maximal ideal , its residue field is itself, and is separably closed.
Non-example: the ring of -adic integers with the identity map fails clause 1. It is Henselian, but its residue field is not separably closed.
