Strong operator topology
Builds on Hilbert spaceAlgebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert spaceTopology generated by a family of seminormsWeak operator topology
Definition
Let be a complex Hilbert space and let be the algebra of bounded operators on . The strong operator topology on is the coarsest topology such that each map , , with , is continuous. Here carries its norm topology.
Remarks
Equivalently, it is the topology generated by the seminorms for . A net converges to in this topology if and only if for every .
Example: on with standard basis , let be the orthogonal projection onto the span of . For every , , so strongly. But for all , so there is no convergence in norm.
Non-example: let be the right shift on . The powers tend to in the weak operator topology. If converged strongly to some , then would also be the weak limit, so ; but does not tend to for . So has no strong limit, while the adjoint powers , which delete the first entries, do tend to strongly. In particular is not continuous in the strong operator topology.
The strong operator topology is finer than the weak operator topology and coarser than the norm topology. A convex subset of has the same closure in both the weak and the strong operator topology.
