Strouhal number

Builds on Dimensionless numbers in fluid mechanics

Definition

Consider an unsteady flow with a characteristic frequency ff, a characteristic length LL and a characteristic speed UU. The Strouhal number is St=fLU.\mathrm{St} = \frac{f L}{U}. For vortex shedding behind a body, ff is the shedding frequency and LL is the width of the body. The speed UU is that of the oncoming flow.

Remarks

It is a dimensionless number: [fL]=𝖳−1𝖫=[U][f L] = \mathsf{T}^{-1} \mathsf{L} = [U]. Example: a cylinder of diameter L=0.1 mL = 0.1\ \mathrm{m} in a flow at U=1 m/sU = 1\ \mathrm{m/s} that sheds vortices at f=2 Hzf = 2\ \mathrm{Hz} has St=0.2\mathrm{St} = 0.2. Non-example: f/Uf / U is not a Strouhal number; it has dimension 𝖫−1\mathsf{L}^{-1}. When the equations of motion are made dimensionless with a time scale 1/f1/f, the Strouhal number multiplies the time-derivative term.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
