Structure theorem for locally compact abelian groups

Builds on Locally compact abelian groupCompact spaceOpen subgroupDirect product of groups

Statement

Let GG be a locally compact abelian group. In this statement, ≅\cong means isomorphism of topological groups, and products carry the product topology.

  1. Let GG be compactly generated, that is, generated as a group by a compact subset. Then G≅ℝn×ℤm×KG \cong \R^n \times \Z^m \times K for some integers n,m≥0n, m \ge 0 and some compact abelian group KK.
  2. In general, GG has an open subgroup UU with U≅ℝn×KU \cong \R^n \times K for some integer n≥0n \ge 0 and some compact abelian group KK.
  3. In general, G≅ℝn×HG \cong \R^n \times H for some integer n≥0n \ge 0 and some locally compact abelian group HH that has a compact open subgroup.

Remarks

Statement 2 follows from 1. A compact neighbourhood VV of the identity generates an open subgroup UU, which is compactly generated, so U≅ℝn×ℤm×KU \cong \R^n \times \Z^m \times K. Inside it, ℝn×{0}×K\R^n \times \set{0} \times K is open, because ℤm\Z^m is discrete, and it is open in GG as well.

Examples: the pp-adic numbers ℚp\Q_p have the compact open subgroup ℤp\Z_p, so n=0n = 0 in statement 3. The direct product ℝ×ℤ×𝕋\R \times \Z \times \mathbb{T}, with 𝕋\mathbb{T} the circle group, is compactly generated, as in 1.

The hypothesis in 1 is needed. The group ℚ\Q with the discrete topology is not of the form ℝn×ℤm×K\R^n \times \Z^m \times K. Since ℚ\Q is discrete, such a decomposition would have n=0n = 0. Its compact subgroups are finite, hence trivial, since ℚ\Q is torsion free, so it would be ℤm\Z^m, but ℚ\Q is not finitely generated.

For a student

The theorem reduces many questions about locally compact abelian groups to Euclidean spaces, discrete groups and compact groups, where Fourier analysis is classical. Statement 3 splits off the Euclidean part, so the remaining factor has a compact open subgroup, as the pp-adic numbers and the discrete groups do. The proof and the theorem are closely tied to Pontryagin duality: the dual of ℝn×ℤm×K\R^n \times \Z^m \times K is ℝn×𝕋m×K^\R^n \times \mathbb{T}^m \times \widehat{K}, with K^\widehat{K} discrete.
