Definition
A factor is a von Neumann algebra whose center is , where is the commutant. A subfactor of a factor is a von Neumann subalgebra that is itself a factor and contains the identity of . One often writes the subfactor as the inclusion .
If is of type with faithful normal tracial state , let be the Hilbert space completion of for . The Jones index of is the Murray–von Neumann dimension of as a module over acting by left multiplication.
Remarks
Example: let be a factor and . Then , the matrices with , is a subfactor of , the matrices over . Both are factors with the same unit, and is the direct sum of copies of as an -module, so .
Non-example: the diagonal matrices form a unital von Neumann subalgebra of the factor . But is commutative and two-dimensional, so its center is , and is not a factor.
Another example: if a finite group acts on a factor by outer automorphisms, the fixed-point algebra is a subfactor with . The index is exactly when .
