Definition
Let be a category with finite limits, and let be its terminal object. A subobject classifier is an object of with a morphism with the following property. For every monomorphism , there is exactly one morphism for which the square is a pullback. The morphism is the characteristic morphism of .
Remarks
Equivalently, when is locally small, there is a natural bijection between the subobjects of and , and represents the subobject functor. Example: in , take and ; for , the unique is the characteristic function, since the pullback of along is . Non-example: the category of groups has no subobject classifier. Its terminal object is the trivial group, so every pullback of is the kernel of a homomorphism, which is a normal subgroup. A subgroup of order in is not normal, so it is not classified. In a presheaf category , the object is the set of sieves on , and picks the maximal sieves.
