Definition
Let be a category and let be an object of . For monomorphisms and , write if there is a morphism with , and write if and . A subobject of is an equivalence class of monomorphisms into for the equivalence relation .
Remarks
Since is a monomorphism, the factor in is unique when it exists. If , the two factors are inverse isomorphisms, so holds exactly when for an isomorphism . The relation induces a partial order on the subobjects of .
Example: in the category of sets, the monomorphisms are the injective functions. An injective is equivalent to the inclusion of its image , since is a bijection onto . So the subobjects of correspond to the subsets of .
Non-example: the map that sends both points to does not represent a subobject of , since it is not injective and hence not a monomorphism of sets.
