Support of a measure

Builds on Borel measureTopological spaceNeighbourhoodOpen setDirac measure

Definition

Let XX be a topological space and let μ\mu be a Borel measure on XX. The support of μ\mu is the set supp⁡μ={x∈X:μ(N)>0 for every open neighbourhood N of x}.\operatorname{supp} \mu = \set{x \in X : \mu(N) > 0 \text{ for every open neighbourhood } N \text{ of } x}.

Remarks

Equivalently, the complement of supp⁡μ\operatorname{supp} \mu is the union of all open sets UU with μ(U)=0\mu(U) = 0. So the support is always a closed set.

Example: let δ0\delta_0 be the Dirac measure at 00 on ℝ\R. Every neighbourhood of 00 contains 00, so it has measure 11, and 0∈supp⁡δ00 \in \operatorname{supp} \delta_0.

Non-example: the point x=1x = 1 is not in supp⁡δ0\operatorname{supp} \delta_0. The open neighbourhood (1/2,3/2)(1/2, 3/2) of 11 does not contain 00, so its measure is 00. Thus supp⁡δ0={0}\operatorname{supp} \delta_0 = \set{0}.

For Lebesgue measure on ℝn\R^n, the support is all of ℝn\R^n. If XX is second countable, or if μ\mu is a Radon measure, then μ(X∖supp⁡μ)=0\mu(X \setminus \operatorname{supp} \mu) = 0.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
