Surface
Definition
A surface is a topological space such that:
- is Hausdorff;
- is second countable, that is, its topology has a countable base;
- every point of has an open neighbourhood homeomorphic to an open subset of .
Equivalently, a surface is a topological manifold of dimension . A surface with boundary is defined in the same way, with open subsets of the closed half-plane in clause 3. A closed surface is a compact connected surface without boundary.
Remarks
Example: the unit sphere is a surface. It is Hausdorff and second countable as a subspace of . Stereographic projections from the north pole and from the south pole are homeomorphisms of two open subsets of onto , and these subsets cover .
Non-example: let be the union of the planes and in . Clauses 1 and 2 hold, but clause 3 fails at points of the -axis. A small sphere around a point of this axis meets in two great circles crossing at two points, a graph with vertices and edges. So has a neighbourhood that is a cone on , and the local homology group is . At a point of an open subset of this group is , and local homology is preserved by homeomorphisms of neighbourhoods.

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
